Hey all! Andrew here with the predictions for Night of Champions 2013, since Matt’s “too busy” to write it, having been at the Manchester United vs Crystal Palace game yesterday (C’mon United!). It’s been a couple of months since I’ve done this predictions malarkey, so hopefully I’ll remember the format and not go off on random tangents throughout.
There are currently 6 matches announced for the main show (a small number, so expect 2 or 3 impromptu “special attraction” matches to take place) as well as the pre-show match, which this time round features the return of the tag-team turmoil gimmick! Let’s get right into them shall we?
Tag-Team Turmoil Match for the No.1 Contendership
I’m not gonna list all the teams, we all know who’s in it. This is the first tag team turmoil match since Night of Champions 2010, where Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre won the Tag Championships. Does that give 3MB the advantage here? We will of course have to wait and see, but it’s extremely unlikely. Now, I’ve been looking through our rules here for the prediction league to see what the case is in a tag team turmoil match, but we didn’t really account for it. The closest set of rules that I can see applies is that of Elimination Chamber matches. A point for the winner, a point for the method, and “free” guesses at the order of elimination. So! As follows…
Predictions: Prime-Time Players to win by pinfall (Order of elimination: 1. Tons of Funk 2. 3MB 3. Real Americans 4. The Usos)
Matt’s Prediction: Prime time players will pick up the victory here by beating the Uso’s . Order of elimination : 1. 3MB 2. Real Americans 3. Tons of Funk 4. The Uso’s
United States Championship Match: Dolph Ziggler vs Dean Ambrose (C)
This is the 4th time in 5 years at NoC that Dolph Ziggler is in a match for a mid-card belt. Two out of other three times have been in matches for the United States Championship, where he successfully defended the belt both times. The other was an unsuccessful attempt to wrest the Intercontinental Championship away from Rey Mysterio. Which fate is more likely to befall him this time round? Definitely the latter. Dolph has no chance of walking away with the belt. For me, the only question is if Ambrose will win clean, or if Rollins and Reigns will interfere and beat Ziggler down post-match. Since Dolph is apparently in the doghouse, a big part of me thinks he will lose clean. Then again, being on the receiving end of a beatdown would certainly be a punishment – both on and off screen. Ah screw it, I’ll combine the two…
Prediction: Winner and STILL US Champion – Dean Ambrose by pinfall. Post match Ziggler will be triple powerbombed by The Shield
Matt’s prediction: Dean Ambrose retains the title via dq. I’m pretty sure The Shield will pop in by on this one and give Dolph a beat down, triple powerbomb to end it. He doesn’t seem to be a favourite right now.
Tag Team Championship Match: The Shield (C) vs ???
Right, please explain this to me, why would Triple H put two of his henchmen in a match where they don’t know who their opponents are going to be? Isn’t that a traditionally heel thing to do to a face? Not giving them time to prepare etc., and presumably therefore more likely to lose the belts? Maybe it’s an excuse they can use to take the belts off Rollins and Reigns. Again though, I think it’s unlikely. Will this end with a spear, a powerbomb or a flying knee? You decide.
Prediction: Winners and STILL Tag Team Champions, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns
Matt’s prediction: Rollins and reigns to keep their titles. Hopefully a good match.
Divas Championship Match: Natalya vs Brie Bella vs Naomi vs AJ Lee (C)
There’s more than one thing troubling me about this match. First off, why do half of the competitors in this match not have last names? We know Natalya is a Neidhart, but god knows what Naomi’s full name is! C’mon WWE, it’s not like they’re Brazilian football players! Secondly, I should be predicting AJ to win here. But then I would have every champion retaining tonight, and that’s something I hate doing. Thirdly, if the rumours are true and AJ is going to lose tonight just to give Total Divas a good season finale, then that’s bullshit. I don’t often swear on here, and I apologise if it offends anyone, but it’s true. At the end of the day, the people who will watch a reality show on E! and the people who will watch Raw on whatever channel it’s on in your country are two very different sets of people. The crossover is minimal. To let the smaller audience dictate what happens on Raw is absolute crap. But unfortunately it’s out of my hands. Knowing WWE, AJ will lose tonight, and it won’t be to the decent wrestlers that are Natalya or Naomi, it’ll be to the girlfriend of a main event player.
Prediction: Winner and NEW Divas Champion – Brie Bella by pinfall
Matt’s prediction: if AJ loses, I riot!! AJ to keep the title via pinfall.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Rob Van Dam vs Alberto Del Rio (C)
The battle of the three part names! Apparently minus Ricardo Rodriguez after Smackdown. Is this what we’re gonna get for the foreseeable? Alberto Del Rio defending the World Heavyweight Championship against whatever veteran isn’t really doing anything else that month? In that case, Goldust put in a good showing on Raw, give him the shot at Battleground. I can understand that Vince wants creative’s attention to be on the Corporation 2.0 angle, with the Punk-Heyman feud probably coming in next, but surely they can work out something for the second most prestigious title in the company that is better than “this guy’s a reasonably big name who’s not doing much, let’s try and create something short term with them”. In case you haven’t worked it out, I don’t like this much. That’s not to say it will be a bad match, these two are very capable in the ring, but I don’t like how it just seems to have been thrown together. Del Rio to retain, probably the lock of the night.
Prediction: Winner and STILL World Heavyweight Champion – Alberto Del Rio by submission
Matt’s prediction: Del Rio retains the title via pinfall thanks to help from Ricardo Rodriguez. Whether it be him turning heel (which I suspect) or just accidentally.
Elimination Handicap Match: CM Punk vs Curtis Axel and Paul Heyman
Will the feud end here? I think so. It’s time Punk had his revenge on Heyman, and I’m not sure there’s much else Heyman can do to Punk without getting some sort of comeuppance. Even with a new client, it would be much the same story re-hashed with somebody else in Axel’s place. They Heyman-Punk feud has been all out since Money In The Bank in July, but it has been brewing since before Payback in mid-June. That’s around 3 and a half, to 4 months for this rivalry. That’s a long time. It’s time to let Punk finally hit the GTS on Heyman, and hopefully then we can get some focus on Curtis Axel. He desperately needs it. He’s the Intercontinental Champion. This is apparently Night of Champions. Why isn’t he defending his title? I suppose they’re just going to say that this is the one night of the year where every champion is featured on the main card. Just being on the show is a step up for Axel at this rate.
Prediction: Winner – CM Punk by pinfall after hitting a GTS on Heyman
Matt’s prediction: this should be a great match. I’m torn though. Everything screams Punk, but it just seems too small an occasion for punk to “get Heyman.” I’m predicting an upset. Heyman and Axel to win. I think Axel will be eliminated first but I think we’re gonna see a new Heyman guy here. I don’t know why but I’m leaning towards Damien Sandow. Call me crazy but I don’t think he’ll cash in tonight but he should be there. Plus teaming with Heyman would do wonders for the heavyweight title when he eventually wins it.
WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (C) vs Daniel Bryan
YES! YES! YES! Who would have thought back in June when these two men fought a week-long trilogy that in a matter of months they would be battling again for the WWE Championship? Maybe a lot of us would have hoped for this, but who thought it would actually happen? It’s a fantastic encounter here with a personal grudge between the two. Even so, I can’t help but get the feeling that this is just a small part of a much bigger picture. The McMahon-Orton-Shield alliance has only really just gotten underway, and I don’t think we’ll have a particularly clear idea of just how far Bryan’s stock has risen in the WWE until at least Wrestlemania next year. Getting back to tonight though, and I’m expecting a top quality match that will get 20+ minutes. These two have really good chemistry together, and the crowd should be pretty pumped up. Will it end with Daniel Bryan walking out the WWE Champion? No. I think it’s too early for that to happen. Will Daniel Bryan lose cleanly? No. You have to believe that either Triple H, a McMahon, a hound of justice or the Big Show will get involved and somehow – possibly deliberately, possibly not at this stage if it is the World’s Largest Athlete that gets involved – cost Bryan the match. With more interference from the powers that be the odds really will be stacked against Bryan, plus if he has been screwed out of the WWE Championship twice he will be an incredibly sympathetic underdog for the fans to get behind. So no, it won’t be a clean finish.
Prediction: Winner and STILL WWE Champion – Randy Orton via pinfall
Matt’s prediction: Only one winner here. Orton to retain. Whether its pinfall or dq I’m not sure. I think that the big show will definitely be involved somehow and it wouldn’t surprise me if he turned heel here. I’ll go for pinfall after the Big Show uses the WMD on Bryan.
Well, looks like I made it. Matt has managed to sneak his in at the last minute too. Night of Champions should be a good show, with Orton-Bryan being the expected highlight, and Ambrose-Ziggler being the show stealer if they get enough time.
A quick note on a couple of things – I am hoping to have a couple of posts up in the next week or two. One is quite topical, one not so much. Also, there probably isn’t likely to be as much material from me (if there ever was before) about the goings on during Raws and PPVs, because I’m now a student at university with no access to TV to see them. Hopefully Matt will be back soon with a column or two to pick up the slack though, he’s on holiday so he should have plenty of free time at the minute (when he’s not watching our beloved Man Utd). So goodbye for now, and hopefully it won’t be too long before we’re back with more content from the Plebs of Wrestling!
