It’s time for the first PPV since Wrestlemania, Extreme Rules! In recent years Extreme Rules has actually been quite a good show, often giving us good versions of the underwhelming Mania predecessors. This is also one of the few occasions in recent years – with the exception of Wrestlemanias or Summerslams – that we appear to have a full card announced before the show starts. There is 8 matches, plus one on the pre-show. But this show is a little different here in this blog, as this is the first time predictions will actually count towards something. This is the first event that counts towards our brand new prediction league, that will feature me and the newest addition to the blog, Matt Mahoney! A full list of the rules we will be using and the updated standings are available on the also new page!
The pre-show this time round is the randomly thrown together Cody Rhodes vs The Miz, to which Matt predicts Cody will win because of his mustache, but I think Miz will win because he’s supposed to be the face, and theoretically a win for him would get the crowd going heading into the show. So now, on to the main card!
Tornado Tag Team Match for the Tag Team Championships: The Shield vs Team Hell No (C)
Andrew: I think this will be a big night for The Shield. And about time too, there was only so long the 3-on-1 attacks could stay effective, and there was only so long the fans would stay interested in their 6-man-tag matches. I have to give credit to the WWE here, they have booked The Shield superbly. Just when they ran the risk of becoming a little stale, they introduced The Undertaker to make things interesting. They started having Ambrose and Rollins compete in one-on-one matches. And they gave them a personal rivalry with Team Hell No – specifically Kane – after The Shield took Taker out. As I said, I predict this being a huge night for The Shield, and potentially for the future of the WWE. It all starts here, with a spear and a 1… 2… 3…
Prediction: Winner and NEW Tag Team Champions: The Shield
Matt: Kane is my favourite WWE superstar and Daniel Bryan is by far one of the most talented in the business. However you cannot argue with the dominance of The Shield. As I said before, with Ambrose, I feel that The Shield are starting to get somewhere and more silverware is the key. As much as I hate to say it, I’m gonna give the shield the win and the titles.
Prediction: Winner and NEW Tag Team Champions: The Shield via pinfall
United States Championship Match: Dean Ambrose vs Kofi Kingston (C)
Andrew: I find this contest very interesting. For all the talk about The Shield being equal, them surviving because no one individual in the group is better than the others, Ambrose has the opportunity to capture singles gold while Reigns and Rollins are left to battle for tag title glory. It will be interesting to see if this is used in the future when the group splits up, or if the others win individual accolades themselves to match Ambrose. The other factor in this match is of course, the United States Champion, Kofi Kingston. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that it is too soon for Kofi to lose the belt, but at this point what will he really gain from a long reign? He is cemented in that career mid-carder role, and it’s not like a short reign is going to ruin that. Kofi is in his seventh mid card title run, of which only one has gone over 100 days. Yes this would be his shortest reign, but let’s face it, Kofi is becoming the definition of a transitional champion. Ambrose to complete a golden night for The Shield with another pin.
Prediction: Winner and NEW United States Champion – Dean Ambrose
Matt: The shield have a lot of momentum and talent and I can see a repeat of the corporation happening where they dominate the title scene. I think Ambrose picks up their first title here. One of many.
Prediction: Winner and NEW United States Champion – Dean Ambrose via pin
Chris Jericho vs Fandango
Andrew: This feud has… dragged. There are only so many cheap shots or sneak attacks we can see between these two before people start to lose interest. Jericho’s promo at the end of Raw was good, but it was kind of too little too late. It all depends on what the future is for this feud for me. If Jericho is leaving again, and this is the last match in the feud, then Fandango should win clean. If this becomes a trilogy, then Jericho will win. I don’t know about you guys, but I haven’t heard any reports about Y2J leaving, and that promo was pretty persuasive. Codebreaker for the win.
Prediction: Winner – Chris Jericho
Matt: Not sure what to make of this. I think this feud could go on a bit longer, but only if fandango drops the dancing crap! He’s got potential to be. Great heel but not if he over plays it. In saying that, I still think he’s gonna pick up the win here. Most likely from some sort of distraction or even by Jericho getting dq’d.
Prediction: Winner – Fandango via disqualification
Extreme Rules Match: Randy Orton vs Big Show
Andrew: I don’t… really care. Looking forward, the most likely scenario I can see for either of these two is Orton challenging Ziggler for the World Heavyweight Championship, so based on that I’m going for an RKO OUT OF NOWHERE!! on to the steel steps for the win.
Prediction: Winner – Randy Orton
Matt: This will be a crap match I can feel it. With that in mind I won’t spend too long on this. It’s been too long since Orton has been in any title frame and this will surely send him there. Big show has had his time and is falling down the ladder.
Prediction: Winner – Randy Orton via pinfall
Strap Match: Mark Henry vs Sheamus
Andrew: Umm, I don’t really know what to say about this one. The feud doesn’t excite me, the match doesn’t excite me, the stipulation doesn’t excite me. Here’s hoping the match itself doesn’t get too long, and more focus is put on some of the others in the under-card.
Prediction: Winner – Mark Henry (because that’s what he does)
Matt: Not too much on this one, I think that Henry’s momentum will carry him through this. He’s looking like a good shout for a big belt (no pun intended) and would play a good heel to a face champion.
Prediction: Winner – Mark Henry
Number 1 Contender’s I Quit Match: Alberto Del Rio vs Jack Swagger
Andrew: It’s a shame that Ziggler got a concussion, but it will be interesting to see if that counts against the man who gave him it – Jack Swagger. Look at his record this year, Swagger has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of drugs, and he has injured the World Heavyweight Champion causing him to miss a PPV. Yes he may have potential, he may have the physique Vince loves, he may have the technical ability, but how many more mistakes can he make before WWE cuts their losses? Even with all this, the reason I’m betting against him here is that he’s a heel, and so is Ziggler.
Prediction: Winner and Number 1 Contender to the World Heavyweight Championship – Alberto Del Rio
Matt: A late change in the bookings and disappointing that the ladder match has been omitted but nevertheless, it should be a good match. Haven’t seen an I quit match in a while so I’m looking forward to it in a way. It may be difficult to look past del rio here, but I am going to. I think swagger picks up the win after using the ankle lock for the 4th time in the match. I’m going to be THAT specific!!!
Prediction: Winner and Number 1 Contender to the World Heavyweight Championship – Jack Swagger
Steel Cage Match: Triple H vs Brock Lesnar
Andrew: This is the trilogy that should never have been. Nobody really wanted to see this match the first time, never mind the two rematches. Still, I like how they are promoting this match like lesnar has the advantage, given that he was a World Champion in the UFC. With that in mind it should be noted that HHH is no stranger to cages in the WWE, having competed in more Hell In A Cell matches than anybody else except The Undertaker, and won just as many as the Deadman. For Brock’s sake, I hope to god he wins here. I don’t know if pins and submissions are in effect here, if they are I would expect Brock to pin Hunter, if not Brock probably walks out the door.
Prediction: Winner – Brock Lesnar
Matt: This is probably the easiest of the picks. HHH had his last day at wrestlemania, but its over for him now. In a cage, you don’t beat Brock lesnar. If he manages to walk out of there able to walk then he will have earned a victory. I think Brock will pin the game after a complete annihilation.
Prediction: Winner – Brock Lesnar
Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship: Ryback vs John Cena (C)
Andrew: I feel like I’m in the minority here, but I think that not only does Ryback need to win here, he has a chance. Cena is at the stage in his career where it doesn’t matter what he actually does, like it or not, he will be the face of the company, and he will be idolised by the kids. So, if he plays the role of transitional champion, he’s not going to lose any credibility. It could be a decent story for the Summer: Cena works for the best part of two years to beat The Rock and become WWE Champion again, and Ryback takes the latter away from him before his run as champion even has the chance to get off the ground. And looking at it from the other perspective, a defeat for Ryback would cause immeasurable damage to his credibility. He is already starting to look weak, having not won a PPV match since last July, and that run needs to stop as soon as possible. Having lost to Punk, The Shield, Cena (at the Royal Rumble) and Mark Henry, the fans can’t be blamed for not believing that he is a threat to the top superstars – or the top belts. Having said all that, this is WWE. We’re talking about John Cena here. Ryback will probably dominate for around 15 minutes and the 5 moves of doom later, Cena retains the belt.
Prediction: Winner and STILL WWE Champion – John Cena
Matt: I hate Cena, this will become less and less of a secret as time goes by. So as a rule, unless I’m absolutely certain that he’s going to win (i.e. wrestlemania) I’m betting against him. I don’t know how much longer Ryback can go without winning at a ppv. He’s got to be given the nod at some point and why not now? It will be close but I think Ryback will take it.
Prediction: Winner and NEW WWE Champion – Ryback
So there we have it! It will be very interesting to see what happens, especially since me and Matt disagree with a few of the matches. I’m already feeling like this is going to be a way to keep us interested in the PPVs throughout the year that really aren’t appealing in any shape or from. But apart from that, a few of these results could have a big impact on the rest of the year if the WWE plays their cards right (which they probably won’t).
The league standings should be updated on either Monday night or Tuesday. Do you guys think we’ve got it right? Are you looking forward to reading some of Matt’s columns? Do you hate John Cena as much as he does? Actually, I think we know the answer to that last one. Let us know by either commenting below or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. And as always, if you’ve made it this far, please pass us on to other wrestling fans, like us, share us, whatever, it really means a lot.
